The nearest escape — a moonscape of pale hills twenty minutes from town. Lunch or dinner in a camp, a sunset, a camel or a quad if you like. The easiest "desert" day there is, and one of the loveliest at the right hour.
An hour south, the air cools and the High Atlas rises. The Ourika valley for rivers and Berber villages, Imlil for walks beneath Mount Toubkal, a lunch by the water. Green, gentle, and a complete change from the city in under an hour.
About two and a half hours west, the wind-blown Atlantic port — ramparts, blue boats, grilled fish on the quay, and a relaxed, artistic air. A wonderful long day, or stay a night by the sea.
Morocco's grandest falls, roughly two and a half hours northeast — a series of cascades dropping through a green gorge, with Barbary macaques in the trees. Spectacular, and best earlier in the day.
Over the dramatic Tizi n'Tichka pass, three to four hours, to the great earthen ksar of Aït Benhaddou — the fortified village you've seen in a dozen films — and the studios of Ouarzazate. A long but unforgettable day; some prefer it as the first leg of a desert trip.

Dreaming of the real dunes? That's not a day trip — see how to plan your days in and around Marrakech →
The Agafay desert, the Atlas and Ourika valley, Essaouira, the Ouzoud waterfalls, and Aït Benhaddou. The first two are the easiest; the rest are longer but worth it.
Not the big Merzouga dunes — too far; that's an overnight. For a desert feeling in a day, the Agafay is twenty minutes out.
