Things to do in Marrakech

The short version. Marrakech rewards three or four days. Give two to the medina — Jemaa el-Fnaa at dusk, the souks, a palace, a garden — and one or two to a day out in the Agafay, the Atlas, or the coast at Essaouira. The trick isn't what you see; it's the hour you see it, and walking through a door that's open because someone vouched for you. Below: the things worth your time, and when to do them.

01Jemaa el-Fnaa, at dusk

The great square is the city's beating heart — storytellers, musicians, food stalls, smoke and light. By day it's hot and quiet; go at sunset, when it fills and the call to prayer rolls over the Koutoubia minaret beside it. Watch it from a rooftop café first, then walk down into it.

02The souks — with someone who knows them

The medina's covered markets are a labyrinth: lanterns, leather, spices, carpets, the metalworkers' clang. Beautiful, and built to disorient. The difference between a stressful hour and a wonderful one is a guide the artisans already know — the workshops without signs, the prices without theatre.

03A palace or a madrasa

Choose one and give it real time: the Bahia Palace for its painted ceilings and courtyards, or the Ben Youssef Madrasa, the old Quranic school, for the finest zellige and carved cedar in the city. Early, before the groups, the light through the screens is the whole point.

04The gardens — Majorelle & the secret ones

The Jardin Majorelle, the cobalt-blue garden Yves Saint Laurent saved, with the Berber museum beside it — book ahead and go at opening. Then the quieter ones most visitors miss: Le Jardin Secret in the medina, a riad garden restored to its old geometry.

05A hammam, properly done

Not a spa add-on — the real ritual of steam, black soap and scrubbing that the city has run for centuries. There's a version for every budget, from the neighbourhood hammam to a private one in a riad. Do it on your first evening; you'll sleep like the dead.

06The desert & the mountains — a day out

Marrakech is the gateway. The Agafay — stone desert twenty minutes away — for dinner under lanterns or a balloon at dawn. The Atlas and the Ourika valley for cool air and Berber villages. Essaouira on the coast for wind, ramparts and grilled fish. Any of them is an easy day; I'll tell you which fits your trip.

Questions people ask me

How many days do you need in Marrakech?

Three to four. Two for the medina, palaces and gardens unhurried, and one or two for a day trip to the Agafay, the Atlas or Essaouira.

What should you not miss?

Jemaa el-Fnaa at dusk, the souks with someone who knows them, one great palace or madrasa, the Jardin Majorelle, and an evening or dawn in the Agafay.

Is Marrakech walkable?

The medina is best on foot — and often only on foot. For the gardens, the new town and the day trips you'll want a driver. I arrange one who knows the city and the back ways.

Want it arranged, not researched? Tell me your dates.

I'll build your days around the right hours and the right doors — the medina, the palaces, the desert — so you simply arrive.
