A riad is a traditional house turned inward around a courtyard and fountain — silent, scented, a world away from the lane outside its door. For a first visit, this is the Marrakech you came for: you walk to the souks, the palaces and Jemaa el-Fnaa, and you sleep in something centuries old. Most riads are reached on foot through narrow derbs — arrange someone to meet you and carry the bags.
The new town and its neighbour are where the contemporary hotels, the boulevards, the galleries and many of the best restaurants are. Easy to drive to, lighter on the senses, with proper hotel facilities. Ideal if the medina feels like a lot, or for the second half of a trip.
North of the city, the palm grove holds the villas and resort-style hotels: large grounds, big pools, calm. You trade walkability for space and quiet, and you'll want a car or a driver. Lovely for families, groups, or anyone who wants to spread out.
Not a neighbourhood but worth a night: the stone desert twenty minutes from town, with luxury camps under enormous skies. A single night here, bookended by the medina, is one of the great Marrakech combinations.
| Area | Best for | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Medina (riad) | Character, walkable, romance | Reached on foot; can feel busy |
| Gueliz / Hivernage | Modern hotels, dining, easy access | Less "old Marrakech" |
| Palmeraie | Space, gardens, pools, families | Need a car/driver |
| Agafay | Desert nights, big skies | Out of town — best for a night |
A riad in the medina for character and to walk everywhere; a hotel in Gueliz, Hivernage or the Palmeraie for space, a pool and easy parking. Many do a few nights of each.
Medina for first-timers and romance; Gueliz/Hivernage for modern hotels and dining; the Palmeraie for villas and pools; the Agafay for a desert night.
Yes — busy and atmospheric rather than dangerous. The adjustment is the narrow lanes; have someone meet you on arrival, which I arrange.
I'll match you to the right riad or hotel — and meet you at the door. More guides →
